What is Solar Hot Water?
Solar thermal is the process of converting sunlight into energy, which is used to supply the heat for a building's hot water or space heating needs. Solar hot water and heating systems collect the sun's energy through solar panels and the heat generated is transferred to your building's water supply. The hot water produced by the system is stored in a water tank that is connected to your building's existing plumbing or heating system. The stored hot water produced by the solar panels is drawn upon whenever there is a hot water or heating demand.
Solar thermal systems are suitable for both commercial and residential installations. There are numerous applications for solar hot water including domestic hot water (showers, laundry, dish washing), radiant floor heating, forced hot air and forced hot water heating systems, baseboard heating, and pool heating. Some ideal building types for solar hot water include senior residences, hotels, hospitals, prisons, universities, apartment buildings, co-ops and condos.
Solar Hot Water is a trusted and proven technology with exceptional efficiency. Efficiency ratings are a measure of the amount of energy that is effectively utilized from a given source, in this case the sun.
Solar thermal systems generate efficiency ratings in the 70-80% range, outshining solar electric (aka photovoltaics or PV) which yield around 14% efficiency. Solar hot water is one of the simplest and cost-effective ways to reduce reliance on expensive and polluting carbon-based fuels such as oil, natural gas or electricity.
